Selecting Thermostat

The three principal factors that influence selection are as follows :

a
Physical dimension and methods of mounting. Full dimensional details are shown under the relevant specifications.
b

Medium to be controlled – this may be air, liquid or a platen but whatever the application, a thermostat can be used in temperature control or indicator circuits.

c

Contact action – a thermostat can be selected with contacts to either make or break on rise of temperature.

Handling and Installation

Although the thermostat is robust and sturdy, it must be remembered that it is the outer shell which is the operating element, and distortion of the shell may affect the operation of the whole system.

For the same reason the thermostat must be installed so that free expansion of the shell is allowed and the maximum area is exposed to the medium to be controlled.

It should also be remembered that because the outer shell is the active control element, it is equally sensitive to radiant heat and direct contact heat (since, in its operation it does not rely upon conduction to the inside mechanism).

Cartridge Thermostat

The basic element of all THERMOSTAT Controls. All the desirable features of ideal thermostat – high sensitivity, wide adjustment range, small sized, rugged construction. Vibration resistant, and low cost are included in this thermostat control.

This unit may be inserted in a 15.875 mm (5/8”) reamed hole. If reamed hole is used, a short spline should be added to receive locating pin on thermostat – this prevents thermostat from turning when the temperature adjusting sleeve is turned. (See Modification.)

For limited space application, a shorter (80 mm) cartridge unit is available.

Hex Head Thermostat

Has all the internal features of the Cartridge Type above with the addition of a standard Type above with the addition of a standard pipe thread for mounting purposes. A dial and knob can be supplied with this model. (See Modifications.)

Block Head Thermostat

This unit may be inserted in a 15.875 mm (5/8”) reamed hole of the medium to be controlled. It has the same mounting characteristics as the Cartridge Type unit but is designed so additional component such as a dial and knob may be included. ( See Modification.)

Flange Head Thermostat

Has all the feature of the Block Head Type except a mounting flange has been provided for easy mounting.

Coupling Head Thermostat

The Coupling Head unit has a hexagonal mounting section with standard male pipe threads at each end, either of which may be used for mounting.  This unit may be directly attached to electrical conduits.
